The Lunar Nodes

You have already met the nodes in Foundations as direction — South Node the familiar, North Node the growth. This lesson goes underneath that, to the thing the nodes actually are, and why the tradition treated them with more caution than any planet.

The nodes are not bodies. They are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the plane of the Sun's apparent path — the only two places an eclipse can happen. That is their real nature: they are the doorways where the two lights can eclipse each other. Everything the nodes mean grows from that. They mark where light gets swallowed and returned, where the familiar order can be interrupted, where fate enters.

In the Vedic tradition the nodes are Rahu and Ketu — the head and tail of a serpent that, in myth, was cut in two for stealing the drink of immortality. The severed head (Rahu, the North Node) still swallows the Sun and Moon at eclipses, insatiable, all appetite and no body to satisfy. The tail (Ketu, the South Node) is all body and no head — capable, karmically complete, but without hunger or direction.

Read that myth into a chart and the nodes deepen. The North Node is not just "growth" — it is appetite without capacity yet, a hunger for something you have no skill in. The South Node is not just "the past" — it is capacity without appetite, mastery you no longer find nourishing. This is why the North Node feels awkward (all want, no skill) and the South Node feels hollow even when it's easy (all skill, no want).

True node vs mean node: the true node reflects the Moon's actual wobbling motion; the mean node is a smoothed average. They differ by up to ~1.5°. This school uses the true node. When the node is tightly aspecting something, the difference matters.

The nodes always describe a process, not a placement. A planet conjunct the South Node is being released — a mastery you are meant to stop leaning on. A planet conjunct the North Node is being developed — a capacity you are growing into, awkwardly. Read them as verbs, not nouns.

The nodal ruler technique (advanced, and worth it): the planet ruling the sign of the North Node is the ruler of your direction. Where it sits, and its condition, describes how your growth actually gets accomplished. North Node in Scorpio → ruled by Mars → find Mars, and that's the engine of your becoming.

Eclipses activate the natal nodes. When an eclipse falls near your natal nodal axis (roughly every 9–10 years, as the transiting nodes return or reverse onto the natal ones), the direction of your life becomes acutely live. This ties the nodes to the Timing module.

You know your nodes by now. Go deeper: find the ruler of your North Node's sign, and locate it. That planet is how your growth gets done — its house is where you must act to move toward your North Node, and its condition tells you how supported or difficult that is.

Then sit with the myth. Your South Node: what are you genuinely skilled at that no longer feeds you? Your North Node: what do you hunger for that you have no competence in yet? The gap between those two — capacity you've outgrown, appetite you can't yet satisfy — is the engine of a life.

Follow the chain. The direction is Scorpio in the 9th: go down, come back, teach what you survived. The ruler of that direction is Mars — so the growth gets accomplished through Mars, through will and fire and the courage to act. And Mars sits in Leo in the 6th, conjunct the Moon, forming the apex that squares the whole nodal axis.

So the ruler of the direction is the obstacle to the direction. The very planet that must carry the person toward their Scorpio North Node — Mars, the fire, the will to be seen and to act — is the same placement that stands in the gate, squaring the axis, demanding the person admit a hunger they've deemed unacceptable. The engine of the growth and the block to the growth are one planet. That is not a contradiction; it is the exact instruction. The way through is the way through. The fire that blocks the road is the only thing that can travel it.
