The Tenth House

The 10th house is the peak of the chart — career, vocation, public role, reputation, what you are known for. It is the house of the Midheaven (Medium Coeli, "the middle of the sky"), the highest point a planet reaches, directly opposite the private 4th. Where the 4th is your roots, the 10th is your fruit: what the life produces in the eyes of the world.

It is also, in the tradition, the house of one parent — often the mother, or the parent who represents authority and the world — and of authority itself, both the authority you answer to and the authority you become.

The 10th is angular and one of the most powerful houses in the chart — in many systems the most elevated and visible. It was associated with action, career, honours, rank, kingship, and the mother in some traditions (the parental axis was split between the 4th and 10th, with sources differing on which parent goes where).

As the Midheaven it is the culmination — the noon point, where the Sun stands highest. The old astrologers read it as the summit of the life's visible achievement and standing.

The sign on the 10th shapes the public role. Capricorn on the MC: authority, structure, the establishment. Sagittarius on the MC: a vocation of meaning, teaching, or distance. Pisces on the MC: a public role that is fluid, artistic, or spiritual — and hard to pin down.

Planets in the 10th are highly visible and shape the vocation strongly. Saturn here: authority earned slowly, a career of duty and eventual mastery. Neptune here: a public role that will not stay defined, a person others project onto. The Sun here: the self must be someone publicly.

Ask: what am I known for, or what do I want to be known for — and are those the same? And: what is my relationship to authority, both obeying it and holding it? The 10th holds both ends of that.

The vocation is Neptunian: the mystic, the seeker, the teacher of the ineffable — a public role built on meaning and spirit, in Sagittarius, the sign of the far search. It is genuinely magnetic; Neptune on the MC draws projection, and people see this person as a vessel for something larger.

The danger is exact, and it is covered in the Neptune lesson: opposite the Sun, the identity already dissolves easily, and a Neptunian 10th puts an audience in front of a person who finds it easiest to disappear into what that audience needs them to be. The vocation asks for the self; the self is the thing this configuration most readily hands over. The integration is to keep a private self the public role has no access to.
