The Sixth House
The essence
The 6th house is work, service, health, and the body's daily maintenance — the unglamorous machinery of a functioning life. Not career (that is the 10th), but labour: the daily grind, the tasks, the routines, the care of the body, the job as distinct from the vocation. It is also the house of the nervous system, of illness, and of the small disciplines that keep a person running.
The 6th is humble by nature, and easy to underrate. It is where the life is actually maintained, day by day, in ways no one applauds.
The tradition
The 6th was one of the difficult houses — a cadent house, and in the joys scheme the house where Mars rejoices, associated with Bad Fortune (Mala Fortuna). It was linked to illness, injury, toil, servitude, and enslavement — the domains of hardship and forced labour. The tradition did not romanticise it.
That older harshness is worth remembering even as modern astrology softens the 6th into "wellness and routine." At its root it is the house of what the body and the working life must endure.
In practice
The sign on the 6th shapes the relationship to work and health. Virgo on the 6th: meticulous, health-conscious, prone to overwork. Leo on the 6th: needs the daily work to be seen and to matter. Pisces on the 6th: a porous relationship to routine, and often to health.
Planets in the 6th show what gets poured into daily labour and the body. Mars here: enormous working energy, and a body that carries the overflow. The Moon here: emotional life bound up with work and health. A planet in the 6th tends to express itself through service, and to register in the body when it is not expressed.
In your own chart
Find the sign on your 6th and anything in it.
Ask: what is my actual relationship to daily work — not my career, the daily doing of tasks? And where does stress land in my body? The 6th often names the exact place the unexpressed material goes physical.
When it lands hard
Moon at 13° Leo conjunct Mars at 10°, both in the 6th house.
The most alive placements in the chart — the emotional need (Moon) and the fire (Mars), fused, in Leo, the sign that wants to be seen — stationed in the house of service and the body.
Read the conversion. A Leo Moon-Mars wants the stage; the 6th house turns that hunger into usefulness, because being needed is a permitted way of being seen. So the fire becomes work. The person becomes indispensable rather than visible — same fire, acceptable disguise. And because the 6th is the house of the body and the nervous system, whatever recognition-hunger is not expressed goes physical: exhaustion that rest does not fix, the body carrying what the performance conceals.
The 6th house is where this chart hides its brightest fire in plain sight, dressed as diligence. The correction is not to work less. It is to let the fire admit what it actually wants.
