The Fourth House

The 4th house is the floor of the chart — home, roots, the family you came from, the foundation everything else is built on. It is the deepest, most private point in the horoscope, the IC (Imum Coeli, "the bottom of the sky"), directly opposite the public Midheaven.

It is also, in the tradition, the father — or more precisely the parent who forms the private foundation, the one whose presence or absence sets the ground you stand on. And it is where you return at the end: home, roots, and the close of the matter.

The 4th is angular — one of the four strongest houses — and was associated with parents, ancestry, land, property, and endings. The Hellenistic texts connect it to the father specifically, and to foundations of every kind: the literal home, the family line, the buried root of things.

As the IC it is the anti-Midheaven: where the MC is the visible peak of the life, the IC is what it grows from, unseen. The old astrologers also read it as the grave — the end of the matter, what a thing comes to rest on.

The sign on the 4th describes the emotional foundation. Cancer on the 4th: home is central, deeply felt. Capricorn on the 4th: a foundation of duty, often cold. Gemini on the 4th: a home of words, movement, or division.

Planets in the 4th describe the private life and the parental foundation. The Sun here is the father, and the self's roots. Saturn here: a foundation of scarcity or heaviness. Neptune here: a home that would not hold shape.

The 4th is where a person goes when the public day is over — and how safe that return feels is written here.

Ask: what was the actual foundation I grew up on — not the story of it, the felt texture? And: where do I go, privately, when no one is watching? The 4th holds both the origin and the retreat.

The Sun in the 4th means the self is rooted in home and father, and must become itself privately first — there is an inward, foundational quality to the identity that the more public Sun placements do not have. In Gemini, the foundation is made of words and movement, and is doubled, divided, plural.

Opposite Neptune, the father-foundation will not hold shape — and because this is the floor of the chart, the instability is not situational; it is structural. The ground itself is permeable. A person built on a Neptunian 4th learns early that foundations can dissolve, and either spends life seeking one that won't, or becomes the stable ground themselves for other people — often both.
