The Eighth House

The 8th house is death, rebirth, and everything buried — what is shared, what is taboo, what transforms you by taking you apart. Other people's money and other people's power. Intimacy in the deep sense, where two people merge and something is at stake. Inheritance, debt, sex, the occult, the psyche's underworld.

The 8th is where you lose control and are changed by the losing. It is the house of what cannot be managed, only survived and integrated.

The 8th was a difficult, cadent house, associated with death — literally the house of death in Hellenistic astrology — and with fear, loss, and what is taken. It was called an idle or inactive place in some texts, and it was not a house the old astrologers were glad to find planets in.

Its association with other people's resources (inheritance, dowry, shared property) comes from its position opposite the 2nd: if the 2nd is my resources, the 8th is ours, and theirs. The modern reading of the 8th as transformation and depth psychology is a genuine development, but the older layer — death, loss, the taken thing — is still underneath it.

The sign on the 8th shapes how a person meets crisis, intimacy, and the shared. Scorpio on the 8th: at home in depth and taboo. Libra on the 8th: the underworld entered through relationship. Aries on the 8th: a direct, confrontational relationship to death and crisis.

Planets in the 8th are intensified and pulled toward depth. Pluto here is doubly strong and at home. Venus here loves in a transforming, all-or-nothing way. The Sun here builds an identity through survival and depth rather than through display.

Ask: what have I survived that took me apart and put me back together differently? And what is my relationship to the things people do not talk about — death, power, money that is not mine, the parts of intimacy that are not comfortable? The 8th is where you are unafraid of what frightens most people, or where you learn to be.

Pluto at 8° Libra in the 8th, trine Venus.

Pluto in his own house, doubled in strength, in Libra — so the underworld is entered through relationship, and the transformative power is relational. This person meets death, depth, and buried material through other people, and has real capacity to go into the dark with someone without flinching.

The trine to Venus makes that capacity flow easily — loving what is buried is native to them. The 8th house here is a genuine gift and a genuine hunger, and learning the difference between the two is the work of the placement.
