Cancer

Cancer is cardinal water — the sign of feeling, memory, home, and the need to belong and to protect. It is the most instinctively nurturing sign, and the most defended: the crab carries its home on its back and its softness inside a shell. Whatever planet sits in Cancer becomes more emotional, more protective, more attuned to safety and to the past.

The gift is care, depth of feeling, and the capacity to make a home for oneself and others. The shadow is defensiveness, moodiness, and a difficulty letting go of what has hurt.

Cancer is ruled by the Moon — the only sign the Moon rules, making it the most lunar sign of all — and is the sign of Jupiter's exaltation. It is cardinal (initiating), water (emotional), and feminine/nocturnal. Its symbol is the Crab; it governs the chest, breasts, stomach — the body's places of nurture and holding.

Cancer is where Saturn is in detriment: the wall-builder placed in the sign that most needs to be held without walls. This is the specific cruelty of the placement. Cancer wants to nurture and be nurtured; Saturn withholds and structures. Together they describe a person who learned to be their own container because no other was reliably there — who developed, young, the Cancerian capacity to hold, and had to use it on themselves first. The sign explains why the Saturn wound is specifically about holding: not achievement withheld, not recognition withheld, but the warm containment a child needs, rationed early. And the mature gift, when it comes, is Cancerian too: this person can hold others with a depth that people who were always held never had to develop.
